“From the first time I fired a .22 to the first time I held a cane pole, all I’ve ever wanted to do is hunt and fish. The urge to be outdoors has not diminished over the last 50 years. It has only grown stronger. Writing about hunting and fishing adds fuel to the fire of my desire to get out there, into the hinterlands, to bring back for my readers absolutely the best outdoor stories.”

Mike Marsh

Mike Marsh, Award-winning Author and PhotographerMike Marsh is one of the most prolific, widely read and highly respected outdoor writers in the nation. Most of his stories and photography are based on his adventures in the Southeast, especially North Carolina, South Carolina and Louisiana. He has written thousands of magazine and newspaper articles and sold thousands of photographs to “hook and bullet” print and online media. In a typical year, Mike produces 400 to 500 published articles and 600 to 850 published images.

He is author of three books, Quest for the Limit – Carolina Hunting Adventures, Inshore Angler – Coastal Carolina’s Small Boat Fishing Guide and Offshore Angler – Carolina’s Mackerel Boat Fishing Guide. More books are under contract or in the design process.

Mike’s weekly columns and news features appear in many newspapers, including the Wilmington Sunday Star News, Tabor-Loris Tribune, Raleigh News and Observer, Goldsboro News Argus and Charlotte Observer.

The organizations Mike has joined have helped him in his quest to be the best at keeping his readers entertained and informed about outdoor sports and the issues facing hunters and fishermen. He is a member of the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association (SEOPA) where he served on the Board of Directors from 2004-06, the Professional Outdoor Media Association (POMA) and the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA). Mike has been awarded ten Excellence in Craft (EIC) awards by SEOPA and three by OWAA for magazine features, newspaper columns and photography.

While he has worked as a fulltime freelance writer and photographer since 2001, he worked for the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Mooresville, N.C. and Wilmington, N.C. for 12 years and at a civil Engineering firm, Joseph S. Hill and Associates, in Wilmington, N.C. for 17 years. Prior to becoming a fulltime writer and photographer, he wrote as a “part-timer” beginning in 1990 with his first book.

While Mike will chase a story about anything that walks, flies, swims or crawls, his primary emphasis is on the hunting and fishing available in the coastal areas of North and South Carolina, especially saltwater fishing, freshwater fishing, waterfowl, small game and big game hunting. Nevertheless, he has traveled to other states and Canda on his own and as a guest of such famed sporting good manufacturers as Avery Outdoors and Remington Arms Company.

His latest venture involves giving something back to the sporting community that has helped Mike live a rich sporting life. Mike founded the North Carolina Public Access Foundation, Inc. in 2008. NCPAF, Inc. is an IRS-approved 501 (c) (3) non-profit public charity, with a goal of saving, increasing and enhancing all types of public access across the state of North Carolina. Mike is Chairman of NCPAF, Inc., and co-founded the organization with Al Baird of the North Carolina Fishing Pier Society.

Mike has also been inducted as a member of the Robert Ruark Society.
